Mobile Lidar Atmospheric Surveillance Along Highways in Washington, DC Area

Aerosols play an important role in the global climate, air pollution and aviation transportation. In the recent years, aerosol lidar has been routinely used to remotely monitor aerosol concentration, air pollution and their impact to the city weather (Welton, 2001). As compared to the measurement at a fixed site, a mobile lidar monitors the evolution of the atmosphere in the scale of several tens or hundreds of kilometers. This kind of scale offers a comprehensive picture of the atmosphere of a typical city or areas between cities and different terrain.
