Seasonal variations of black carbon at Syowa Station, Antarctica

摘要

Black carbon (BC) in atmosphere is one of the most important substances to estimate and discuss aerosol-climate interaction because of strong optical absorption. Particularly, BC deposition onto snow surface can engender significant reduction of surface albedo. BC sources in the Antarctic regions are limited to human activity in research stations, ship operation in Antarctic coasts (mainly in summer), and airplane operation for transport and scientific research. Considering low source strength of BC in Antarctic region, BC is expected to be used as “tracer” of air masses from low- and mid-latitudes. Here, we would like to present results of BC measurements in the Antarctic coasts to understand air quality in Antarctica, seasonal feature of BC concentrations, and long-range transport from midlatitudes to Antarctic regions.
