Attention has been focused on the method for abating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at a low concentration (less than about 100 ppm) from exhaust gas of various kinds of factories by atomizing water containing acrylamide polyampholytes (APAs). APAs, which are composed of positively and negatively polarized side chains and a non-polarized main one, have the potential to adsorb various sorts of VOCs regardless of their polarity. Conventionally, two fluid spray nozzles requiring compressed air have been used for the APA-solution atomizing method. Meanwhile, one-fluid spray nozzles which can omit compressed air have an advantage of low operation cost, while their drawback is to be VOC removal performance inferior to the two-fluid ones owing to their coarser atomized droplets. In this study, we attempted to improve VOC removal performance of the one-fluid spray nozzle up to the same level as the two-fluid one to develop a compact VOC treatment system using one-fluid ones. Regarding the method to enhance the performance of one-fluid nozzle, we adopted the modulated electromagnetic field (MEF) one usually used for preventing fouling of piping (Shahryari and Parkshir, 2008).
