Laboratory Simulation and Characterization of Biomass Burning Emissions in China

Biomass burning (BB) has been recognized as an important source of atmospheric particulate matters on both regional and global scales. Black carbon (BC) and organic carbon (OC) emitted during BB have significant impacts on solar radiation and, cloud formation (Andreae et al., 2001; Deng et al., 2008.). In China, large crop residues are intensively burned in the open field after harvest, emitting abundant gases and primary particles and resulting in severe regional haze events. It is essential to understand the emission characteristics of BB by using both laboratory and field studies. Results obtained from field BB samples vary due to differences of crops and environmental conditions, so it is difficult to compare. Thus, controlled laboratory simulation can better improve our understanding of BB emission. The purpose of this work is to characterize the gaseous and particles emissions of representative crop residues in China in the ways of open burning and residential stove.
