A PM0.1 unit for the evaluation of personal exposure to nanoparticles based on “the inertial filter technology” (Otani et al., 2007) was applied to the online monitoring of concentrations of PM0.1 and particle-bound black carbon (BC) by combining with a condensation particle counter (CPC) and a multi angle absorption photometer (MAAP). A simple monitoring tool of PM0.1 and BC in PM0.1 applicable to various environments was proposed. Geometry of the PM0.1 unit is shown in Fig.1, which consists of a main inertial filter (PM0.1 inertial filter) and a pre-cut inertial filter, and a two stage pre-cut impactor (Thongyen et al., 2014). The main inertial filter consists of layered square mesh TEM grids sandwiched by spacers in a circular nozzle through an aluminum cartridge. The pre-cut inertial filter (dp50~450nm) consisting of webbed stainless fibers in a circular nozzle was used upstream the main filter to prevent bouncing of 300~500nm particles on the TEM grids. The two stage pre-cut impactor (e.g., PM2.5/10) was for removal of huge particles. The PM0.1 unit can provide dp50 ~100nm at a rather small pressure drop (~5 kPa).
