Process-based numerical models, commonly used to assess morphological response of a coastal system to some form of perturbation, remain fundamentally limited by computational demands and different timescales of the governing hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes. Such limitations are commonly via application of a morphodynamic scale factor (fMOR) to accelerate the simulation, in combination with some schematization of boundary conditions. In this paper a ‘brute force’ morphodynamic model (Delft3D), encompassing full feedback between waves, tides, sediment transport and morphology, is used to hindcast the seasonal (order of months) evolution of the Ancao inlet, Ria Formosa, Portugal. The ‘brute’ force morphological model is then used to assess the skill of an ‘accelerated’ simulation using a novel acceleration technique that uses a genetic algorithm (GA).
