Dredge disposal activities in the Horseshoe Bend of the Atchafalaya River in Louisiana have resulted in the formation of an island. To gain a better understanding of the island’s genesis and subsequent behavior, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers has performed image classification from its yearly aerial imagery in this region to identify and calculate acreages of land, including sand, emergent vegetation, and woods. While the acreages of land types are trending towards an increase over time, the classification process has revealed that water hyacinth and river stage impact the calculations, adding noise to the data.
