Measurements of bedforms (including dunes, megaripples and orbital ripples) from recent experiments in tidal inlets and from the literature will be used to test a self-organization model for bedform generation and dynamics. In the model, slabs of sediment are moved according to a transport formulation that is driven by measured fluid flows. Irregularities on the bed alter the flow through intuitive feedback rules and bedforms are built because of the feedback. The 1-D version of the model has skill in reproducing observed bedform dynamics in the surf zone. The model has been updated with a larger domain and multi-directional flow. Using this new improved model, growth of bedforms, directional dependence of bedform migration and superimposed bedforms of multiple scales will be examined with the model.
