On the servo motor drive system for shock absorber performance test

This paper describes a project on test facilities of automotive shock absorbers. The objective was to develop a new drive system for obtaining accurate and flexible exciting curve for shock absorber performance test. Traditional testers use a frequency variable motor and eccentric mechanism to generate approximate sine movements. This leads to distortion of performance curve, trouble in variable stroke test and long testing cycles. Servo-hydraulic techniques can solve the above mentioned problems. But its drawbacks such as larger space occupation and higher purchasing/maintenance cost limit its application in manufactures. Hence, in this project, a drive system, including a smart servo controller, a servo motor and a precise ball screw was used for exciting shock absorbers under stroke from 10 to 60 mm and test speed from 0.005 to 1.5 m/s. The demand to the drive system is being analysed. The system diagram, key parameters and detailed design procedure are presented. Finally, a test result of a double-tube shock absorber confirms the advancement of new drive system.
