A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on a side-opened, metal film-coated microstructured optical fiber for high sensitive, real-time sensing is proposed and analyzed first. This configuration not only ensures a fast response time, but also brings up a designing flexibility for the integrated SPR sensing applications. For obtaining better sensitivity, the sensing mechanisms based on monitoring the transmission loss spectrum peak shift is explored and compared. Simulation results show that this novel configuration could cover a wide refractive-index-detecting range with an enhanced sensitivity resolution up to 2.3e~(-5) RIU.
