(5)Integrated System of Social Information Management: Preventing, Monitoring and Learning

Rio Tinto (RT), a leading company in the mining industry, has been exploring the La Granja Project in northern Peru since 2006, a copper deposit located in the Cajamarca region, Northwestern Andes. The mining activity in this region constantly faces significant social challenges, while trying to maintain and strengthen local support to the Project and access appropriately the resources to operate a mine sustainably (Bautista A. & Ménard, 2011). Throughout these years, Rio Tinto Minera Perú (RTMP)- a subsidiary company to RT - developed a Model of Social Information Management, key to the operation through the management of everyday relationships with communities and stakeholders in the Project's social footprint. This model has helped with the management of social risks in relation to these groups, contributing to conflict prevention and resolution. This model is based on an Integrated System of Social Information Management (SIGIS1), which is defined by clear intervention processes and the design and implementation of support software for these interventions. The model consists of different modules interacting with each other and contributing to a better understanding and analysis of the relationships between RTMP with key stakeholders. It uses an adequate approach to their concerns, perceptions and claims, as well as management of meetings with the community and the social commitments the company engages in. SIGIS seeks to leverage data generated in daily interactions and social investment projects, in order to convert this information into a key element for planning and strategic decision making. A basic component of the system is the generation of reports and alerts, allowing the analysis of learning experiences, progress follow-up and monitoring through indicators. SIGIS is designed, aligned and integrated with HSE (Health, Safety and Environment)Management Systems, the departments of Human Resources and Procurement, which aims to manage and share relevant social information for strategic processes of the La Granja Project. This integration with other systems and departments of the Project guarantees a special emphasis on monitoring the daily relationship with different stakeholders, the entire company staff and contractors, as well as giving feedback to social engagement teams, supporting their relationship agendas with different stakeholder groups.
