With the development of large scale renewable energy, more and more fluctuating power is injected to the power grid, which harms the stability of the whole power system. To solve this problem, massive battery storage system (BESS) is used as energy buffer to improve the stability of power grid. Compared to traditional topologies of power conversion system, cascaded H-bridge converter (CHBC) has higher reliability, redundancy and efficiency, which makes CHBC more suitable for massive BESS. This paper discusses the configuration of 2 MW/2 MWh BESS first. Then the control scheme of CHBC-based massive BESS is described in detail. At last, a Li-ion BESS with seven-level CHBC prototype is built in laboratory. The experimental results verify the feasibility of CHBC-based BESS.
