Acroni (Slovenia) is a highly specialized niche supplier of plates and strips made of stainless steel grades, toolsteel, abrasion-resistant steel and HSLA grades. In recent years, the company followed a continuousmodernization approach to upgrade its production units and to increase its competitiveness. The modernizationcomprised a new 2.6-m heavy plate mill stand as well as new heat treatment equipment. In 2016 a novel MultiFlex-Quench~R will start-up at Acroni, a new quenching concept offering a high degree of flexibility as well as maximumcooling capacity. The partner of the modernization has been SMS Siemag with its subsidiaries.The new 2.6-m heavy-plate stand was installed in 2012 and has a rolling force of 60 MN and is equipped withhydraulic adjusting systems and heavy-duty work-roll bending systems. The mill stand was pre-assembled andtested in the SMS Siemag workshop in Germany in order to realize the installation at Acroni within a shortshutdown period.The new MultiFlex-Quench~R is different from other continuous quenches as it is not separated in a high pressureand a low pressure section; thus the complete range of cooling rates can be realized along the complete length ofthe quenching unit. Therefore, all cooling strategies can be applied from abrupt water quenching right down togentle cooling. Due to the installation of different nozzle systems and control valves, the MultiFlex-Quench~R can bedesigned individually according to the product program.
