Today's modern electric arc furnace (EAF) normally operates with high power input and short tap-tap time and highdemands on bath mixing capacity to improve the heat and mass transfer. Electromagnetic stirring is reliable solution forimproving the EAF process. A new generation of electromagnetic stirrer, ArcSave~R for the EAF operation has beenintroduced by ABB in 2014. Electromagnetic stirring gives a more homogenous melt and enhances the kinetics in heatand mass transfer in the arc furnace process. One ArcSave~R has been installed on a 90 ton spout tapping furnace forstainless steel production at Outokumpu Stainless Steel AB in Sweden in 2014. The effect of ArcSave~R on the EAFprocess has been studied in the hot test period and this paper will summarize the hot test results obtained from thisinstallation. The results show that ArcSave~R enhances the scrap and ferrochromium melting and reduces the energyconsumption. With stirring the ferroalloy is molten in a very efficient way, thus giving better steel yield as well as betteraccuracy in tapping weight. Steel temperature is more homogeneous and tapping temperature is controlled morecorrectly and this will smooth the AOD operations. The slag reduction is also enhanced by stirring which results in highalloy yield and lower FeSi consumption. Short tap-to-tap time and consistent furnace operation also enables anincrease in productivity.
