Employing best practices in the transfer of moltensteel from the ladle to the tundish will reduce steel reoxidationand provide a beneficial effect on steelquality. Tight sealing of the ladle shroud and collectornozzle joint during ladle open and ladle drain willreduce Nitrogen pickup and is an important factor inminimizing re-oxidation. Different designs of ladleshroud/collector nozzle configurations are used bysteel makers around the world. The effectiveness ofthese designs in minimizing re-oxidation depends notonly on their design parameters but also on thepractice of engaging the ladle shroud and collectornozzle. Misalignment of the ladle shroud andcollector nozzle detrimentally affect sealing. The typeof gasket used at this joint also has an impact on thesealing. Equipment was designed and fabricated totest various connection designs at elevatedtemperatures using different gasket materials andwith various degrees of misalignment of the ladleshroud and collector nozzle.
