FCH Buses - Added Values besides Climate Change Mitigation

The presentation summarises the main results from the CHIC research on social acceptance of FCH buses and hydrogen technologies [1]. A special focus is given to the added values identified by bus drivers and regional stakeholders. The qualitative research approach used is based upon the understanding that acceptance is a process, dependent on several influencing factors and changing over time. In total 185 face-toface, one-hour interviews in five of the CHIC regions were conducted between August 2011 and March 2013 in pre- and post-interviews. The overall acceptance of the project initiative and the hydrogen technologies in the group of bus drivers was generally supportive and/or tolerant, but already eroding at the times of the interviews. However, the driving comfort of the electric drive and the project "vision" convinced people and appeared to make up for set-backs in reliability and performance. Regional stakeholders evaluated project success and technology suitability to meet their regional challenges relatively to their prior expectations. The final evaluation had not yet been done at the times of the interviews.
