From a socioeconomic point of view, the use of lignocellulosic biomass as a feedstock for renewable fuels and platform chemicals is preferential over the use of edible plants. However, the crystallinity of native cellulose and the lignin shielding the carbohydrates make this type of biomass highly recalcitrant towards chemical transformation and require energy intensive pretreatments in order to make the polymeric sugars accessible for hydrolysis. Additionally, in order to make this process economically viable, full utilization of all components is required, including the lignin fraction which . potentially can be used for the production of aromatic value added chemicals and fuels. We have therefore put a new focus on the recovery of lignin.
