MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 based glass ceramic were prepared with iron tailings, magnesite tailings, bauxite and titanium slag by sintering method. Different analysis methods such as DSC, SEM and XRD were adopted to research the influences of the amount of Na_2O effect on crystallization and properties of the tailings glass ceramic. Results show that with the increase of the content of Na_2O (from 1% to 5%), the nucleation temperature was reduced gradually, the crystallization temperature was getting lower in general, and the crystallization ability of the tailing glass ceramic was strengthened; when the content of Na_2O was 5%, the main crystalline phase of the glass ceramic was cordierite crystals, the crystal texture distribution are dense and uniform with moderate grain size and low impurities. The result indicated that suitable amount of alkali metal oxide could affect the crystallization behavior and improve the properties of tailings glass ceramics.
