Process Optimization in Vacuum Distillation for Titanium Sponge Preparation and Magnesium Recycling

For obtain pure titanium sponge and recovery of excess magnesium that used in reduction process of titanium production, the vacuum distillation of reduction products were theoretically analyzed based on thermodynamics. Experiment studys of system pressure, temperature and time control has been conducted for process optimization. The thermodynamics analysis results show that relative volatility of Mg and MgCl_2 with Ti is more than 2.21x10~(11) at 900°C-1000°C. Experiments show that system pressure of vacuum distillation process should be less than 4Pa, preheating temperature should between 770 °C- 800°C, the early stage of preheating time should be controlled in 2h-2.5h, continuous spray time of spray water in the initial distillation process should be controlled in 27h-33h. After the distillation process optimization, the product grade rate of titanium sponge improved significantly. Almost all MgCb and excess magnesium in the reduction products can be recycled.
