The Future of Nuclear Power in Asia

Asia is the largest net energy importing region of the world. Energy security has become crucial topic in the policy circles. Additionally, fossil fuel prices have shown great variations. In such scenario, nuclear power is an attractive solution to reduce the import dependency of Asia’s major energy consuming countries. However, the security concerns related with nuclear power makes the decision to adopt this technology very complex for the governments. Fukushima disaster has also increased the safety requirements adding to capital expenditure and project delivery lag time. In this paper, Enerdata will present its forecast for nuclear power generation for various Asian countries and also provide our cost estimates for nuclear power vs other power generation technologies. Regional variation of costs is also discussed. Finally, we present our views on the on-going developments in nuclear power in South East Asia. Overall, the paper aims to give a comprehensive, unbiased and healthy overview of the nuclear power industry and its future in Asia.
