Determination of Climatic Design Conditions of Combined Cycle Plants in Tropical Region

it is well known that the performance of a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant varies in relation to dynamic weather conditions. Therefore, how to determine design and site conditions of a new CCGT reasonably is vital to capital expenditure, power output, thermal efficiency and operating cost. However, the guidelines for determining design climatic conditions and cooling water temperature are not well available to power plant developers and consultants. In practice, quite different criteria have been used in the same country and states. This paper is aimed at providing some guidelines on collection and analysing of raw climatic data and selection of design conditions for a CCGT plant in the tropical region. The paper also generalizes the effects of design ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity and cooling water temperature on the performance of a CCGT plant using the data extracted from a reference project in Singapore, and give insights to the selection of non-reasonable design and site climatic conditions in some projects in Malaysia and Singapore.
