Viability of SCR on Simple Cycle Frame Gas Turbines

As the power market turns toward more natural gas – combined cycle for base load operations, and simple cycle turbines for peaking power – ever stricter environmental controls apply. In the peaking segment, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) has routinely been installed on Aeroderivative turbines, but not on large Frame units, reflecting local requirements and perceived engineering challenges of applying SCR on Frame-type combustion turbines. Regulatory developments now require SCR on most peaking units. Four large F-class frame gas turbines have been operating successfully with SCR for over one year, and others have been ordered. However, there is still controversy about the viability of SCRs in Frame-type turbines. The authors provide an overview of the current status of SCR on Frame-type gas turbines, based on interviews of market participants (SCR/catalyst vendors and gas turbine manufacturers), review of technical literature, and analysis of operating data.
