Improvement of Refining of Cotton Pulp with Wood Pulp and Their Specialty Paper Properties

The paper manufacturing process should be changed depending on the end use and paper properties. In order to fulfil those purposes, the pulp fibers selection and refining should be controlled. To reduce the production cost and improve the paper quality, usually more than two types of pulp are mixed at certain mixing ratio. For specialty paper manufacture the wood pulp and cotton pulp are usually mixed together. Complexity of refining and mixing ratio of cotton pulp and wood pulp demands more detailedanalysis data. Refining response of cotton pulp only, combination of wood pulp and cotton pulp were changed for proper paper properties. Fiber length, fines content, coarseness, curl, kink, bulk, air permeability, light scattering coefficient, tensile strength, elongation, tensile energy absorption, and elastic modulus were measured and compared. Most of handsheets properties were improved when wood pulps were mixed than cotton linter pulp only. Particularly, when the mixing ratio of SwBKP was increased, the physical properties were increased a lot.
