The bleach addition to seawater cooling system is actually the most widely used technology for micro and macro-fouling control, but the limitations to total residual halogen in discharge water, 0,2 ppm as total chlorine, coupled with the high reactivity of Cl2 with seawater organics producing AOX and THM that contribute to the total residual halogen, often make chlorination effectiveness very poor. The Edipower Milazzo power plant located in southern Italy has 2 x 162 MWe unit burning heavy fuel oil (HFO). The aim of this plamt was to test an alternative technology, improving the treatment efficiency without impacting the discharge limits. See plant and the installation on next Figure 1.
