For a number of years Enbridge had recognized that the gas flow meters used in storage operations to measure flow in and out of the storage reservoirs were far from "state-of-the-art". By late 2009, a number of factors prompted the decision to undertake a multi-million dollar project to replace centralized orifice-plate meters with remotely-located ultrasonic meters. Remote meter stations were seen as a way to increase system utilization and improve operating flexibility but because of their location presented challenges that had to be addressed in the design. By early 2012 the company had constructed, commissioned and put into service six-stations and by early 2013 had completed the first full injection-withdrawal cycle using the new meter stations. This paper focuses on the factors considered in developing this project and how the decision to remotely locate these stations affected the design.
