Up to now, fossil fuel is the most important energy resource in the world. In China, coal is the main energy resource being consumed; nearly 70% of the electricity is generated from coal-based power plants. However, the efficiencies of the current power generation methods of coal are very low, also accompanied with serious environmental impact. Integrated Gasification Fuel Cell (IGFC) power generation is a kind of highly efficient and environmental friendly energy conversion technology. Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is the core technology in IGFC. SOFC related actions have been supported in China, including NSFC-National Science Foundation of China, MOST-Ministry of Science and Technology [National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) and National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program)], MOE-Ministry of Education, CAS-Chinese Academy of Sciences, Local Governments, Industries and Others. During the Chinese “12th Five Year ” Plan from 2011 to 2016, the MOST supported both the “863 Project” (2011-2013) and “973 Project” (2012-2016) to put forward the development of SOFC in China. In the “863 Project” of “Key Technology of Fuel Cells and Distributed Power Generation System”, there are several kW SOFC stacks and systems are measured and demonstrated by the team such as DICP, NIMTE, HUST, SCICAS. In the “973 Project” of “Fundamental Research on Coal-Based SOFC System”, the series researches including materials, cell design, carbon fuel, electrode reactions, modeling, stack and system have been doing in the “973 Project” teams of 10 researches group, including universities, institutes and company.
