This paper explores the design of closures in a variety of early twentieth century Chinese women's clothing.I will focus on the use of metal buttons as well as knotted closures,both coiled and wired.I will consider as well how the design of such closures are incorporated into the whole concept of the garment,as appliqué and ribbon trims are supplanted by simpler bound edges.Examples from the Lai Mah collection and others will be shown.
