PREPARATION OF HIGH PURITY ISOTOPIC REFERENCE STANDARDS FOR ISOTOPE DILUTION MASS SPECTROMETRY

The preparation of highly enriched, chemically pure isotopic reference standards has been investigated. Utilizing a Scandinavian type 90° sector mass separator, high purity specimens of Ba-134 and Sr-84 have been collected on foil substrates. Using a simple leaching method to recover the isotopes from the foils and a variety of chemical separations techniques including solvent extraction and ion exchange, highly enriched and chemically pure reference materials have been prepared for use as isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) standards. The results of the techniques that were investigated and the protocol ultimately used to produce a final set of reference standards will be presented.
