Slag from scrap copper smelting comes from the process of reclaimed copper pyrorefining. The content of copper and zinc the slag are high but the existing form of copper and zinc is complex. The particle size of the slag changes from micrometer-to centimeter-sized. It's difficult to recover copper and zinc effectively. XRD and MLA were employed to characterize the slag. The results showed that copper basically consists of elemental copper, alloy and oxide while zinc is mainly composed of oxide, alloy and aluminate; the slag also includes several contents of iron and silicon. A new process of gravity concentration- magnetic concentration- leaching- extraction has been conducted based on initial analysis. Large size particles of elemental copper and copper-zinc alloys were recovered by gravity concentration. To separate iron, silicon and other impurities from copper and zinc, the process of leaching- extraction has been studied. The results of industry experiments showed that 97.33% of copper and 97.13% of zinc were recovered. This new process is an effective way to recover copper and zinc from slag from scrap copper smelting.
