Arsenic levels of residents of Nev§ehir province, Turkey

Geological studies have recently shown that Arsenic (As) levels in drinking water;; ranged from 11 to 500 μg L~(-1) in Nevsehir province, Turkey. This study, as a part of ongoing molecular epidemiology research concerning carcinogenic risk related to As exposure through drinking water, was focused on the determination of total As concentration in hair and urine and as well as urinary As specia-tion of residents collected from six villages with levels of As > 50 μg L~(-1) and between 10 and 50 μg L~(-1) and from four villages with levels of As < 10 μg L~(-1) in drinking water. As levels in hair samples exceeded 1.00 μg/g (ppm) for 71% and 14% of subjects from villages with levels of As > 50 μg L~(-1) and between 10 and 50 μg L~(-1) in drinking water, respectively, indicating the toxic effects.
