The solvent extraction of iron (III) from acidic chloride solutions by Trioctylamine (TOA) and decanol in kerosene has been investigated. The effects of TOA, decanol, chloride ion and hydrogen ion concentrations on the extraction rate of iron (III) were studied. And the extraction mechanism was discussed. The solvent extraction results demonstrated that the addition of decanol eliminated the third phase in the extraction of TOA for iron (III) from acid chloride solutions and that the extraction rate of iron (III) was improved. The extracted iron is present as HFeCl_4 ? TOA ? 2Decanol and HFeCl_4 ? 2Decanol. Kinetics of the extraction process was very fast, since the equilibrium was reached in 3 min. Titanium (IV), aluminum (III), calcium (II) and magnesium (II) were not extracted under the experimental condition. Iron (III) was easy to be stripped. Using water as the stripping agents iron (III) nearly could be totally stripped from the extraction complex. And the potential for the extraction and stripping of iron (III) from acid chloride liquors has been assessed through extraction and stripping isotherms.
