In this paper, red phosphorous (RP) was coated by aluminum hydroxide to prepare modified RP (MRP). MPR was blended with high density polyethylene (HDPE) to obtain MRP/HDPE composites. And the properties of MRP/HDPE composites were investigated. The effects of MRP on the flame retardancy, thermal decomposition behavior and mechanical properties of HDPE were also discussed. Introduction HDPE has been.largely used in various areas such as packaging, food industry and so on. However, with its low limiting oxygen index (LOI), the poor flame retardancy restricts its applications. As a kind of halogen-free retardants, metal hydroxides are used to improve the flame retardancy of polymer[l, 2]. However, they also have some disadvantages, just like high loading which leads to deterioration of mechanical properties of polymer. RP is also a kind of important flame retardant for polymer[3]. However, there are two problems which limited its application. They are the chemical instability and heave color (dark purple). Therefore, RP generally could be used after surface processing[4-8]. In this paper, aluminum hydroxide was used to modify RP and to prepare modified RP (MRP). The effects of MRP on the properties of MRP/HDPE composites were investigated.
