The iron-nickel intermetallic compound layer was in situ fabricated on the surface of balk iron by means of adding the nickel powders during the surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) process.The microstructure and phases evolutions were investigated by optical microscope (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS).The alloying layer of about 50-100 μm thick was observed and confirmed by concentration profiles of Ni and Fe, and found to consist of FeNi and FeNi3 compounds.The alloying layer was found to securely adhere to the Fe base.
