An XAS Study of the Surface of Low-Temperature Carburized Stainless Steel

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is used to study the surface of low temperature carburized 316L stainless steel (SS) and untreated 316L SS to determine how the carburization process affects the surface structure of the treated samples. Low temperature carburization greatly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of stainless steel. The step heights in the XAS for the primary metal atoms remain the same for both carburized and untreated samples, indicating no significant change in the relative concentrations of each of the different metals in the surface. The location of the carbon has been determined to be in the octahedral interstices of the FCC lattice.
