Most of the energy used in the US and the world is derived from the combustion of fossil fuels. Alternative sources of energy such as solar energy, wind energy, etc. are intermittent and require the generation of a fuel or chemical storage system for their practical implementation as major sources of energy. Hydrogen has several favorable attributes for use as an energy storage medium and carrier, including its facile and high efficiency conversion to electrical energy. However, there is currently no scalable and sustainable method for generating hydrogen.
