Hydrogen storage and release via hydrolysis of sodium borohydride is tantalizing because the potential gravimetric efficiency on a materials-only basis is 10.7 weight percent. In addition, the chemical hydride can be stored at ambient temperature and pressure. However, the detailed mechanism and therefore a kinetic model have been very difficult to determine. Historically, kinetic studies have focused either on aqueous catalyzed systems at high concentration (approximately 10% by weight NaBH4 or higher), or in non-catalyzed systems at low concentrations.
