Today's energy landscape is dominated by the combustion of fossil fuels to produce electricity. As a result, there is net generation of carbon dioxide (CO2) on a global scale. Increasing atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases are strong contributors to the phenomena of climate change and global warming. While the energy landscape is shifting to favor renewable and cleaner energy sources, reducing CO2 emissions from existing sources could lessen the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels. Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) are therefore important and vibrant research areas.
