Recent field evidence shows the presence of nitro-phenolic compounds in biomass burning influenced secondary organic aerosol. The results from laboratory and smog chamber experiments suggest that these compounds likely form from the reaction of gas-phase phenolic compounds originating from biomass burning in the presence of NO_x. These compounds contribute as much as 3.8% to the organic carbon fraction of wintertime aerosols collected in a rural German village, indicating that they are important secondary organic aerosol constituents during the winter months.
