Two trends in the filtration industry are changing the landscape: (1) the need for filter elements of complex, or “non- standard” shape, designed to fit in the crowded “under-the-hood” environment, and (2) the continuing drive to reduce costs. At the 2012 AFS Spring Conference Filtrona Porous Technologies reported on a series of applications and technologies for direct formed filter structures to address these trends. The purpose of this presentation is to share our latest data on direct formed filter structures in a variety of transportation, industrial and water filtration applications. These filters are highly amenable to creation of porosity gradient structures. Direct formed filters have been found to be excellent depth coalescers useful for removal of water from diesel fuel. Data will be presented showing filtration efficiency and pressure drop as a function of interfacial surface tension, water content and wall thickness. Data on dirt holding capacity will also be presented. Direct formed filter performance will be presented vs. standard pleated media designs. Information on the use of direct formed filters will be explored for additional applications such as: (1) Removal of oil mists in diesel engine closed crankcase ventilation (CCV) systems, (2) Formed fiber tubes comprised of engineered resins and bicomponent fibers, and (3) Industrial and water filtration markets.
