Wettability between Iron Based Matrix and Ti(C,N) Reinforcement of Cermets at High Temperature

Ti(C,N)-based cermets are an interesting group of materials for cutting tool manufacturing due to their excellent properties as high hardness and high oxidation and wear resistance. The metallic matrixes used are conventionally Ni and/or Co, and a small amount of secondary refractory carbides as WC and Mo_2C are added to improve the wettability between metallic matrix and ceramic reinforcement. In this work it has been studied if the addition of these secondary carbides could influence the wetting behaviour and the solubility between ferrous metallic matrixes and Ti(C,N). High temperature wetting experiments have been performed to study the evolution of the contact angle with time and temperature. Also the interface between the phases has been characterized to check the influence of the metallic matrix composition on the solubility.
