Obtaining of Materials-Getters Based on Intermetallides by Electro-Pulse Sintering of Titanium Sponge with Aluminum and Niobium Powders

It has been proposed to use a titanium sponge to obtain materials-getters containing intermetallides by electro-pulse sintering. Techniques and equipment for electro-pulse sintering of powders and producing materials-getters containing intermetallides of the Ti-Al-Nb system are explained in this work. Techniques and equipment for determining the structural-phase composition, permeability, strength and getter properties of porous samples are described. The research results of the properties of samples produced by electro-pulse sintering of a charge consisting of powders of a titanium sponge with additions of aluminum and niobium in its composition in different combinations are presented. It has been established that the samples under investigation have porosity in the range of 44-46%, an average pore size in the range of 120-130 μm, and strength in the range of 120-125 MPa. It has been shown that materials made of titanium-based charge with 27-28% of aluminum content are titanium a-alloys, and materials made of titanium-based charge with 27-28% of aluminum content and 3.5-4.4% of niobium content are a-β-alloys with inclusions of intermetallides of Ti_3Al (28%) and TiAl (65%) systems. Samples containing additional intermetallides of Ti_3Al-TiAl-AlNb system are made of titanium-based charge with the content of 27-28% of aluminum and 9.5-10.4% of niobium. It has been established that the introduction of 27-28% of aluminum into the charge based on sponge titanium powder improves the sorption volume of the produced materials by 1.8-2.0 times, and the introduction of niobium in its content in the amounts of 3.5-4.4% and 9.5-10.4% increases the sorption volume in 4,0-4,2 and 5,4-5,6 times, respectively. It has been proposed to use produced materials-getters made of intermetallide alloys, made of titanium sponge powders with inclusions of aluminum and niobium, in the production of fuel elements of hydrogen economy.
