The steady state Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method was used in this research to evaluate the influences on the defrosting mass flow rate distribution and the airflow structures caused by the simplified computational domains. Based on the complete domain with whole geometrical details, two simplified computational domains were set up to investigate their impacts on the mass flow rate of each defrosting outlet region. And two defrosting duct cases with modified outlet sizes were analyzed using each domain. The third simplified computational domain was built to study the defrosting airflow structures in the cabin, especially the left side window. Correspondingly, the third defrosting duct design case, whose outlet positions and sizes were changed, was evaluated using the third simplified domain and the complete domain. Recommendations and limitations were summarized for using simplified computational domains in the early design stage according to the CFD results.
