One of the recent global trends of the energy industry is the use of opposite-firing burners. This is because ofthe need for higher capacity, the use of ‘very low rank coal’ is gaining momentum in the latest boiler designs formore cost effective solutions, and standards on environmentally hazard substances are getting stricter aroundthe globe.The Units 5, 6 of the Yeongheung Thermal Power Plant completed on Dec. 2014 use opposite-firing typeburners with a capacity of 870MW. The system was designed to burn low rank coal at 4,980 kcal/kg based onthe range coal criteria while strictly keeping the emission of NO_x below the regulatory limit of 15 ppm. Thereduction of NO_x emission during combustion has a significant meaning not only because it is required toestablish an eco-friendly facility but also because it helps more reliable boiler operation by preventing troublesin the Selective Catalytic Reduction (hereafter SCR)system backend facilities through the reduced use ofammonia.
