Utility scale energy storage technology is improving grid reliability and paving the wayfor the successful deployment of intermittent renewable resources. This sessionprovides specific examples and case studies describing how existing and evolvingstorage technologies are successfully being deployed in the market. This session willprovide a developer's prospective focusing on the proposed New Summit PumpedStorage Project [P-14612] (Project); a closed hydro pumped storage project to belocated in Ohio utilizing an existing abandoned mine. The discussion includes optionsto address potential users in developing the Project including major utilities and ISOslooking at pumped hydro energy storage as a means of meeting load demand, bringingstranded renewables to market, providing ancillary benefits, and grid stability. Means ofevaluating pumped storage hydro projects and associated tariffs to make pumpedstorage hydro a valuable energy and grid asset is discussed. Current energy researchpredicts revenue from installed energy storage for the grid and ancillary services of theUnited States to expand from approximately $700M in 2014 to over $15B by 2024.
