A New Model for Location Assignment for Outbound Containers in Container Terminals

This paper examines the location assignment for outbound containers in container terminals. It is an extension to the previous work of Kim et al. (2000) and Zhang et al. (2010). In order to simplify computation, the previous work imposed an "optimistic" assumption which requests no more than one relocation movement brought in by each newly arrival container. In this paper, we attempt to turn this "optimistic" assumption into a relatively "pessimistic" one. To achieve this goal, a stack is represented as the stacking configuration of the stack rather than the weight group of the heaviest container loaded in the stack as adopted in the previous work. The solution qualities for the original and new models are compared on both static and dynamic indicators. The numerical experiments indicate that the new model reduces the two indicators by 15.16% and 13.72% on average, respectively.
