While current vehicle safety systems are unquestionahly lifesaving technologies,they unfortunately are limited by the lack of knowledge about the tire-vehicle states and operating conditions.Classical observer based indirect measurement techniques exhibit unsatisfactory results during severe maneuvering conditions.Since all forces and moments acting on the vehicle are generated between the tire and the road(except aerodynamic forces),tires coulcl play a vital role in improving vehicle stability by providing the tireroad interaction forces,and other parameters at the contact patch.Knowledge about these additional tire-vehicle states can significantly reduce the risk of accidents,through effective design and implementation of advanced chassis control systems.This paper examines the potential performance improvements offered by integrating information from a tire attached sensor unit(intelligent tire system) with the vehicle stability control system.
