The phenomena of charge collapses occur frequently during an investigation of the manufacturing process of a 25500KVA hermetic furnace in a calcium carbide plant, and the normal manufacturing works are affected seriously. Frequent charge collapses and large ones not only destroy the charge layer structure and dissipate a lot of enegy of reaction zone, but also result in a low quality of calcium carbide, a low reaction temperature and a hard discharge of the calcium carbide liquid. Based on the property of the charge during calcium carbide manufacturing, the paper discusses the mechanism of the charge collapses and analyses the causes of the frequent charge collapses in a hermetic calcium carbide furnace with the standpoint of the charge and electrodes operation, and in purpose of providing operable suggestions for preventing and reducing the occurrence incidence of the frequent charge collapses in practice.
