In most circumstances, the refining industry closely monitors future global crude production trends. Given the lead time of several years to approve, fund and construct major projects, it is critical to anticipate changing production patterns to ensure the availability of compatible grades which match the design basis for new refineries. Historically this process has worked out well for refiners, but not always.
