摘要

1 INTRODUCTION The idea of crystallinity, when applied to cellulose, is relevant to the mechanical strength of living plants and of materials like wood and cotton that are made from plants, and how these properties can change through degradation and other effects. It is also highly relevant to the conversion of lignocellulosic materials to liquid biofuels~2 and nanostructured fibres for the manufacture of new, sustainable composite materials~3. This Chapter will demonstrate that the nature of crystallinity in cellulose is not coherently enough understood to meet the requirements that flow from these diverse areas of relevance, and that new approaches are needed.
