Many flexible packaging applications require a laminate which marries together the barrier and mechanical performance of different flexible films or substrates. This provides outstanding pack performance with minimal use of raw materials, such as: ‐ Lightweight ‐ The performance benefits of different individual materials ‐ Excellent barrier to moisture, gases, aromas and light ‐ Optical properties and exceptional vehicle for on-pack graphics ‐ Low impact conversion. However the use of mixed materials also brings some critical issues: ‐ Recycling becomes effectively impossible (contamination by residual product, incompatible materials, inks & adhesives) ‐ The overall Life-cycle impacts may be higher than anticipated due to the nature of key barrier materials employed in the construction. ‐ Majority of raw materials are sourced from fundamentally finite resources.
